Default Del Sol

The S2K is the first Honda I ever really looked at from a buyer's view point. A lot of you are Honda fans, so if some one told me (about the S2K), "that's the first convertible one of those things I've seen." were they referring possibly to the Honda Del Sol? I've seen a few of these around since I got the S2K, and hadn't realized Honda made another 2-seater. What years did they produce the Del Sol? Was it a "performer" like the S2K, or more of a "Miata" class (fun, sporty, but no real teeth." Thanks....

I used to be a real Del Sol fanatic, but ever since the s2k came out i was hooked. I believe they started making them in 91 and stopped in 97. The S version had around 120hp, Si had 140 or so, and vtec had 160. I wouldve taken offense if someone thought my car was a del sol though..oh yeah del sol has a targa top..

The correct years were '93-'97, with the DOHC VTEC hitting the market in '94. That version, cranking out 160 hp, was definitely a performer. First car in the US to hit 100 hp per liter. It wasn't as fast as the S, but I could wax the occasional Mustang GT (pre-'98) in my lightly modded one. The 8200 rpm redline was SWEET!! Good training for 9K in the S2000 . It would absolutely crush a Miata in a straight line, but it was front-wheel drive, so handling wasn't as good as the Miata's. But all in all, it was a great car, and I really miss mine. I had a lot of fun in it. Some people say it wasn't a true convertible...that it is simply a Targa. I disagree...show me any other targa that has a back window that rolls down. It greatly enhanced the open-air experience.

It's funny...no one has ever mistaken my S for a del sol, but there were several occasions where people would ask me if the del Sol was an S2000. One guy asked me, "Is that one of those new Hondas with the push-button starter?" I always got a kick out of that. Here was mine:

By the way...that car was much more rare than the S2000. Between '94 and '97, only 12000 VTEC Sols were sold in the US. The color above was only available in '95, and only 500 were sold here. Wow...this really turned out to be a long thread!! I guess I really do miss the del Sol .

Prior to the del Sol, Honda made rear-drive ragtops like the S600 and S800:
