Robb, I guess we can all have these thought's. Old 911 or new S2K or 350Z (etc..).
I got the S2K. It's fun to drive. It's a convertible (the 911 isn't is it?).
You think (hope) the 911 will end up costing the same as the S2000 after 5 years. That may be true if it doesn't need work. You seem to be banking on only maintenance work on the porsche. What if it needs a new engine or tyranny etc??? The S2000 should be much less likely to have a major problem.
I am not sure how good an extended warranty is going to be on an older car. Is it bumper to bumper? Find out what is covered exactly. If the head gasket goes is this covered? If the brake system goes is this covered? Etc..
Basically I'd go with the S2000 unless you are prepared to pay for the porsche if it has a major problem. How much could it cost? Worse case scenario?
If you drive them both ask yourself is the 911 more fun to drive? Is the 911 as tight and rattle free as the S2000?
It's a hard call because the porsche is a great car. But the S2000 is also a great car. Ask yourself what would the S2000 sell for if it were made by Porsche (it had the prancing horse badge)? I think it'd sell for $40K (just like the boxster).

I think the C2 *feels* better than the C4's. If the car is going to be a daily driver in bad weather - then I'd consider a C4. If it's only going to be a sunny weekend spring/summer car - I'd get a C2 or an S2000 over a C4.
If you love the idea of a convertible - get the S2000 for sure.

I just found this board and I finally found a reason to resister. First of all the early 964's did have lots of problems, if you do get a 964 go for a 92 or newer. Or a 87-89 Carrera with the G50 transmission, these cars usually cost more than early 964's due to their fairly bulletproof engines. (you probably already knew all of this anyway) You might also want to try www.pelicanparts.com Their forums are much better than rennlist for earlier Porsche's. Do a search and you will find tons of info on the pluses and minuses of the 964's. I have a 1978 911sc with over 186,000 miles on the original engine and it runs great with no problems, however the SC engines are known to go on forever. There are plenty of faster cars out there, but nothing beats the feeling of a older 911. Its so much fun to drive because you feel so connected to the road. I also think that the S2000 is a great car, but I've never driven one before.
