I like it. Putting aside the whole debate over whether the 1 series is all that it could be, it remains BMW's smallest, lightest car. Adding the ///M treatment to that can't be a bad thing. Really this is the opposite of the SUVs if you think about it, it should restore one's faith rather.
I could see myself in one of these- smooth enough for the interstate commute, but ready for action once a good road presents itself, room for the wife & a car seat.
Biggest issue- 2011 Mustang GT. My unscientific analysis is BMW is going to try to upgrade 135/335 buyers, but these are not brand loyalists. Most of these people have jumped over the years from one sporty car-of-the-day to the next. The progression goes something like this:
Honda/Acura -> WRX/Evo -> 135 -> ???, my guess is the Mustang GT
I guess that won't be too much of an issue because they won't make too many of these so there will be enough interest to keep them in demand.

I've always wanted to like the 1 series, but just never have.
I am happy that they are releasing an M though; not because I like it but because it will put pressure on the 50-60k range of performance vehicles and hopefully lead to better choices in the future.
If there is one thing about the 1M that I am sure is true...you don't want to buy one used. You'll get the worst of the worst in terms of BMW's customers, turbo, and aftermarket chips in just about every single one (which will be removed before resale...).
Of course, low resales will just enhance the boy racerness as a 2 year old 1M will be accessible to every spiky-hair-with-frosted-tips 20 year old in the universe.

Looks exactly the same as a regular 135i sans the CSL wheels.
I totally dig on it

This thing better run circles around the 135i or else it will turn into the same argument that happened with the E90 generation 335i having more sales because it was 80% the car the M3 was.
