The 4th gen Preludes with the VTEC engine were very rare cars in the US and are quite hard to come by. Today low mileage, 4th Gen VTECs often sell for more than a newer (an much more common) 5th gen model with comparable mileage.

Regardless, both the 4th and 5th gen VTEC Preludes are wonderful, sporty, reliable , and comfortable drivers cars. I've owned 3 of them (two 4th gens and one 5th gen). And I would highly recommend the VTEC Preludes (as long as you get a manual transmission model).

My daily driver is a 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R. If you can find one, the 91-94 Sentra SE-Rs fit your criteria. And they can be had for well under $5000.

I have a '92 hatch; it's solid. Great for hauling stuff (I've fit in a full size futon and frame once, and another time the bench seat from a full size van, no problem). Great mpg (I'm still above 30mpg on regular gas), lotsa cheap parts (I've done headers, exhuast, air intake, rims, and audio, sway bars, all under $2k total).

Downside - it's not exactly fast. It's not exactly great handling in the corners. But that's what my S is for. They're also pretty easy to work on, and (ok, I'm biased) think it still looks pretty good.

I bought a 92 eg hatch for 2000$ last year. It was in great shape and I love the shape. I have driven it the past year everyday to work and back. My commute is 8 miles one way. The lowest mileage tank to date was 36mpg. I merge onto the highway in 2nd gear..... I've done everything to this car I can think of to break it as I originally had the idea to engine swap it (drop clutch, attempt repair jobs I have no business doing, taken apart things I know nothing about, etc).

I just drove back from charlotte and my trip meter is at 360 miles on the current tank with plenty of room. It has a 10 gallon tank....

Summary

Get an EG Hatch , or buy mine so I can get a 96

Joey needs something that can easily fit S2000 bumpers and fenders inside.

Good Luck dude, BTW, I'll be in Texas the end of March.
