CRV - tranny went bad
Okay guys need some help here. I have a 2002 honda crv lx 4 speed automatic. Well it seems 1st gear wont engage that we'll any more. Now I'm thinking about swapping out the transmission (it's actually almost out).
Now I know I could buy a rebuilt transmission but they run about 1k.
I'm looking to spend the least I can.
does anyone have any idea what jdm equivalent transmission I could use?
I was at local jdm seller that has a few similar transmissions but I think they are 5 speed ones w/ 40-60k.
Does anyone know if I could use a 5 speed instead of the 4 speed it uses?
will I need to change ecu as well or should it work using the same?
does anyone know of any other places that sell cheap but good transmissions?
Thanks in advance

Nope not sure. It does engage but only after like the engine revs up to like 3k or so rpms. Then it suddenly jerks and engages. all these chunks of metal came out when we replace the transmission oil. I know it's normal to see small shaving but this was chunks like the size of a pea.

I'd try to get an identical transmission to replace the one you have. This is going to be the least difficult to install and get working properly. I can't imagine a used transmission being very expensive for this car.

Not trying to upgrade. I would rather stick with a 4 speed. The only reason I would consider the 5 speed is cause I can get one for 500 bucks with 40-60k miles. I found a used one on cl but has 160 miles and they also want 500 bucks.
I know it all depends on what needs to be replace but does anyone the average cost of a rebuild? Maybe I should take it to a shop and see how much....

Typical Honda transmission rebuild is $1500, give or take a few hundred. Our old Accord needed a tranny rebuild and it cost $1700.
