Haven't used one in years (retired road warrior) but as I remember detectors are useless against "instant on" radar and lasers unless there is a lot of traffic and the cops are active with their devices.
Out on open roads the detectors only let you know you've been busted.
Someone here can probably update me on the technology on both sides but where I drive they are useless

You are asking for a ticket if you are speeding and there are no other cars around you.

Any? Ummmm no, not all radar detectors are the same, V1s are one of the most sensitive detectors out there hence a lot of the complaints for false alarms.
You do realize if you get hit with laser, you are only slowing down to pull over right? There is no warning time for laser unless you have a jammer.

key word "not using laser"

For the most part I've only seen lidar in metro areas. On the open roads, it's been mostly always-on Ka, and for that, a detector is very helpful. I did get lidar once out in the desert, not too far from a military base. There weren't any cops around. I always wondered if someone was using me for target-acquisition practice!

In the DFW area, all the little mid cities in between and around Ft Worth and Dallas all have lidars, and on the freeway or major roads, it's primarily what they use. If a cop is posted up with the intent to issue out speeding tickets, they are using lidar. The only time I ever see Ka/K band is when a bogey is just patrolling with the radars blasting.
With that stated, I would still never run around without my radar detector. We have a LOT of artificially low and political speed limits around here, so its easy to be going the speed limit, then cross some arbitrary city line, and be going 10mph over the limit. So it's always good to know if a bogey is in your area when your traveling so you know how well you need to keep your speed in check.
As far as beating lasers, I've done it quite a few times, I'd probably say about 50%. The only tickets I get nowadays are where the cop is using a laser. There are some states (like Oklahoma) that don't use lasers at all, instant-on was quite rare as well, that was where you could roll around about as mindlessly as you wanted to and still be fine, the DFW is a whole different ball game though. The crime rate is pretty low in the entire area, so the only good the cops are for around here are to generate revenue for their respective cities.

VA and DC are the only problem areas, but the Redline has the full VG2/Spectre cloak if you were to accidentally leave it on when crossing state lines.
