Haven't used one in years (retired road warrior) but as I remember detectors are useless against "instant on" radar and lasers unless there is a lot of traffic and the cops are active with their devices.

Out on open roads the detectors only let you know you've been busted.

Someone here can probably update me on the technology on both sides but where I drive they are useless
Any radar detector is going to be useless unless you use common sense.

You are asking for a ticket if you are speeding and there are no other cars around you.
Wrong. Any good radar can alert you miles and miles ahead if the cop is not using laser. They are only trained to take readings from up close giving you more than enough time to slow down.

Only partially useless if the LEOs are using laser which is rare since they are expensive and require special training.

Radars are only illegal in D.C. and Virginia.

I have a Escort Redline, saved my ass a lot of times and it is undetectable by radar detector detectors.

It not only is for prevention but can tell you when a cop is bullshitting. While I was driving on route 66, backwoods Illinois, I got pulled over in the S going 10 over. My radar detector never gave me a signal so I can tell he was BSing me when he said I was speeding. When I called him out on not having my speed, he said "You looked like you were going fast". So he gave me a Verbal warning and let me go

Any? Ummmm no, not all radar detectors are the same, V1s are one of the most sensitive detectors out there hence a lot of the complaints for false alarms.

You do realize if you get hit with laser, you are only slowing down to pull over right? There is no warning time for laser unless you have a jammer.

A good start would be doing your own research. If you can't or won't take the initiative to do your own homework then an RD may not be the solution for you. Try using sites that specialize in RD's versus relying on this thread alone. As always, consider your sources, validate, corroborate, etc.

The point is that one cannot rely on the RD alone. One has to be aware even with an RD. The RD does not replace awareness.

Varies by jurisdiction. Laser is pretty common around here.

Again, depending on jurisdiction an officer may not need to measure speed with a device. Granted, other methods may be less accurate but when you're both in court guess whose word will be taken over the other's?

One of. There are others out there and sensitivity isn't the only concern that everyone has with selecting a RD. Again, anyone considering one should do their own research. I prefer the V1 but wouldn't blindly recommend it to everyone. As with any topic, each has to find the option best suited to the individual.

BS. Please don't spread misinformation here.

Locally they'll hit you twice with the laser, the second one is what you'll get the ticket for. I don't know if the second shot is for verification, but it's twice. And most likely the LEO has already tagged a car ahead of you, which alerts your detector, and gives you a brief moment before he tags you. I evade laser regularly but you have to be on your toes, practicing SIPDE and at the ready. I will not speed where the radar traps are, here locally, unless there are cars around me. If I'm the first car out of a pack coming up a hill and the LEO is positioned correctly, that's when I CANNOT beat him with his gun.

Someone mentioned that you have to know what you are doing, and that poster is 100%. My V1, in the car on the motorcycles has probably saved me close to 10k now, in fines, over the last 15 years. It's a tool. You can't just power one in the car and turn your brain off. You have to constantly SIPDE, and use that detector to your advantage. Scanning ahead, looking on service roads for common hiding spots, paying attention to the cars around you, stay in a pack, etc. The people that bitch about them and say they don't work are the idiots who install one in their car, turn their brain off, and expect the radar detector to wipe their arse.
