As was mentioned in the original article, GM is going to be watching and helping the engine get built. The steps the future owner will partake in are not operator critical ones.
Funny thing is I bet if Porsche offered this on a GT3 people would think it's cool as hell. The price is high for many but I'm sure GM doesn't expect that many people to say yes and I also suspect they will make the whole event rather memorable for the buyer. I mean look at the number of people who do museum delivery. That costs extra yet lots of people do it anyway.
Then again reason on this board is sometimes suspect. Heck, I remember one poster who claimed that F1 success resulted in high quality cars. Of course he also bashed Jag for using Ford parts... never mind Ford's success in F1. Like I said, logic on this board is iffy at times.

The Corvette plant has always been very personal with people. I went to a couple Corvette meets at the plant in Bowling Green and it was really neat to see the people who purchased new cars and chose to pick them up at the plant. The purchaser gets to walk through and see every step of their car being built, and they also get to be the first person to ever turn the key of their car.
I say GM. If any of you know any true Corvette enthusiasts you will know that this $5800 option box will be check quite a few times.

BTW, I could see a program like this working for Harley-Davidson.

I'm thinking if GM allowed a few custom pieces to be installed and then allow these pieces to included on the window sticker invoice upon delivery. You'd truley have a one of a kind custom built Corvette.
For starters, I'm thinking Recaro's and customized carpet to match.
At re sell, these two factory installed and unique changes would probably cover the added cost which could be partially recovered when selling the stock interior on your own after delivery. Forgive me if I'm only deaming.

If you don't think that having a hand in building the engine for your ZR1 or ZO6 is cool, please leave your man/enthusiast card by the door on your way out. It's friggin' awesome. Is it expensive? Sure. But it's still cool as hell, and would be an awesome experience. And there will be a GM tech standing right there doing most of the hard stuff anyways.

for the dude who loves vettes and has no limit on budget, why not? vettes have so much brand loyalty that while some people stretch to buy them, others do it even though they can afford much more expensive cars.
