I read the article on this car in Wired - any idea why he equipped it with only 2 forward gears?
If the torque curve is flat enough, then you don't really need that much gears. Remember, gearing for sports cars were designed so that the car has acess to the most pwoerul rpms. If it always has tons of torque, then you don't really need more gears. If you look at the Z06 Corvette, the first gear can get to 75 mph because it has so much torque.
As for the $40k sedan, I think that'll be great for something like a luxury car. Tons of torque with a quiet motor.

Hey Lice Locket.
Check out AC Propulsion's Scion Xb's new Webpage. Looks like it (and the webpage) is in the works. http://www.acpropulsion.com/new.htm
And from what I read in articles, they will convert a Scion for you NOW if you really dying for one. Not cheap though. $55k + Scion Xb.
Of course, if you want to wait for a production version... it will be a little longer wait, and cost about $40k. The funny thing is that it looks like ACP got Toyota to partner with them to sell the Xb without the engine/tranny.

The EV and HEV markets are really only being held up by battery and fuel cell technologies. That is supposed to change very soon especially on the battery side of things. However, I don't see pure EV's becoming popular until the world decides that even hybrid drivetrains aren't efficient enough.
