Default Considering an Audi S4/ A4 as DD. Opinions?

Hey guys. Ive been thinking alot lately about what I want to/need to do, and Ive decided to return my '02 S2000 to stock, and trade it in on a more "practical" car. Ive been saving to purchase a 2nd vehicle as I was planning on keeping the S2k, but with me also trying to save for a house and other things, Im stretching my finances way too thin to live comfortably, and decided just having 1 car would be the best bet right now. Anywhoo.. after looking for a while, I think Ive decided that im going to look for an '02+ A4 or pre-03 S4. Needs to be quattro and a manual trans. Anyway, I know the 1.8Ts are decent engines, but not too familiar with the rest of the car, or the 3.0 or 2.7T if I would get one of those. Just wondering if anyone owned one before or has experience with these cars, if so let me know what you think? It seems to be a very nice looking and comfortable car, the AWD will be great in the winter ( I kinda miss my 2.5RS), plus they are a bit more "upscale" of a car, something Ive been wanting lately. Just looking for some opinions or things to look for from anyone who may know.

Dont really care for the A6 quite as much. I am really leaning alot more toward the S4 over the A4 though, just need to decide if I can justify the price difference.

My opinion is they don't have the features over a comparable lexus to justify the increase in maint. costs and reliability hassles. Fun cars to drive though considering the class and great ride quality, also the manual transmission option would limit you to Audi or BMW since MB and Lexus don't offer manual for all intents and purposes. With a test drive it should be fairly clear which you like better S4 or A4, I prefer the S4.

Economically the s2000 is more practical IMO, but the S4 obviously has more room and if you drive in the snow that'll be a vast improvement over the s2k.

For the "luxory sport" class, the audis are the most fun and sporty that I have driven yet. Ive also looked at BMW 330Xis, but the car just felt numb to me, no character. I would love to just pick up an E36 M3, as my friend had one and I loved the car, but I dont really want to drive that in winter. I wont settle for anything in an auto, Ive never owned an automatic car.

The 2001.5+ B5 S4 is a great car. I had the 6MT with the stage 2+ goodies on it. It's a beast off the line and the AWD drivetrain is rock solid. The only things you need to worry about are turbo replacement which requires the engine to come out and the rear main seal leaking which is another big job. Other than that you just need to keep an eye on the throttle body boot for tears or get the APR bipipe which is a solid piece.

B6 S4's can be had in the mid to low 20s these days. The B5 can be had for peanuts, but you really need to find the right car, and do your research too.

I've been thinking on the B7 A4 these days, that 2.0t is supposed to be a gem. Great all around DD if you're looking for some lux.

The 1.8t is a great motor.... I used to own one. As far as the 2.7t's go, I am not sold on them. My good buddy had 2, and they weren't exactly cheap..... for anything, and they always had little headaches, something to worry about always it seemed. And it wasn't just his 2, they aren't the cheapest/easiest cars to work on/replace stuff. My $0.02.
