I recently picked up a Fit for a daily, and I love it.
I'm regularly amazed at the amount of stuff you can cram into it, while still being surprised at how small a car it is. When I see other cars out there on the road like the Cooper S and the Fiat, I think they're cool and stylish and fun to drive, but there's no way in hell they'd fit a 60" dresser in the back (yup!) or my bike without needing to take a wheel off (yup!).
Sure it's not the fastest thing out there, but the HP is perfectly adequate for what it is.
I'm a little disappointed by the gas mileage, as I was hoping to get up into the low 40's, but it hasn't happened for me. City driving nets me a mere ~30 MPG. I really wish Honda had given us a Fit hybrid option here in the states, it seems like a no-brainer.
Either way, I love it.

I'd recommend a 2011 or later Elantra. 2011 and later has the newer engine with a timing chain and direct injection. I just picked up a 2013 one for a daily driver, and I love it. I was able to get a good price on a manual Elantra because I saw this car sitting in the lot for weeks, and nobody picked it up. I would guess that very few people in the market for a cheap, seemingly boring car can drive a stick. It corners surprisingly well for a car as tall and comfy as it is. The ride is very soft and great over bumps, yet somehow this doesn't lead to extensive body roll. And best of all, it is very quiet at low to medium speeds, a welcome relief from the noisy S2K.
I got 40.5 MPG on a highway cruise in the car, and in my regular commuting on a 55 MPH highway with stop lights, I get 34-37 MPG.

Another vote for the fit. Going on 70k miles on our 07 with no issues. Fun little car that can haul a lot of stuff. Its actually pretty incredible what you can fit in the Fit

Yet another vote for the Fit here. I had a 2010 for a DD and it was enjoyable to drive with the manual transmission. I wanted something with more power so I traded it in for a GTI, but you said you wanted reliable so I won't suggest that 
. The GTI is a blast to drive (much more so than the Fit) but with less than 5k on the clock the water pump blew out, which apparently isn't uncommon. The standard Golf is reasonably priced and might be worth looking at, but it's definitely not as inexpensive to maintain or as reliable as a Honda.
