Cobra vs. Vette
Everyone is talking about the new c6 z06. I have a couple friends who are mustang lovers and talked about the upcoming mustang svt cobra. I remember reading an article on it in Car and Driver. What do you guys think in comparison of the two vehicles in terms of price, power, handling, etc....

Their only similarity is being highpowered, rear-drive american cars powered by V8s. I guess that sounds like alot, but they are really completely different animals. THe 'vette is a world class sports car, the Cobra, with its higher curb weight and 2+2 seating, is more of a GT, albiet a fast one.

It's kind of like the difference between a 911 and an M3. One might be better at one thing than another, but the two cars are certainly not directly comparable except on the most superficial aspects. Both cars have their adherents, for good reasons.

The Shelby GT500 is a fast GT with a good motor, okay chassis, very heavy, fairly poor handling, and poorer braking and roadcourse reliability when compared with the Z06. It's also $20-25k less in price.
The Z06 is more powerful stock, much lighter weight, much better handling, better braking, overall better materials and build quality will be superior compared with the Shelby GT500.
Personally, if someone is interested in pure straight line speed and pretty good looks at a good price, look at the blown 5.4 Shelby GT500. If you want overall world-class sports car at an unbeatable price, the Z06 is your only option.
Honestly, those that say the Shelby GT500 is better in ANY way other than being able to seat 4 in a tight pinch and quicker/cheaper to add horsepower due to the blown motor will be those that couldn't afford the Z06 in the first place.

here is the difference.....Z06 will be able to brake, corner, take off and engage afterburners. The cobra will only be able to go straight, it wont be in the same league as the Z06. Yeah it might handle pretty well, but from what you guys have taught me, a 3600-3800lb car will only handle so well.
Both will have ridiculous engines. Cobra owners will love the fact that a pulley swap will get you 40-60 at the wheels, and to be honest that is pretty sweet. My response to that is a cam swap will full exhaust on a LS7 will be in the realm of 550-600 at the wheels, all this in a 3100lb car. So what if it takes a grand more to go that much faster, in the long run the LS7 will be the true contender.
Simply put, the cobra has one problem, weight.

I think the Mustangs should be now compared to Chargers than Vettes.
GTO vs. Charger vs. Mustang GT is the starting class
Mustang Cobra vs. Charger SRT8 is the midrange
Z06 - Viper - Ford GT is the high end where mustangs aren't invited to dance.
