No matter the price of gas, premium is always 20c-30c more a gallon. You're not really saving that much. If gas was 50c a gallon, premium would still be $2-$3 more a fillup.

Not true. When premium was $0.299 (and yes, I'm really THAT old ), regular was two cents a gallon cheaper. When premium was around $0.50 a gallon, regular was about a nickle cheaper. The difference has NEVER been fixed at 20-30 cents, or any other value; It varies with the price of the gasoline, and probably runs close to an average of 8-10%. When gasoline hits $20/gal., the difference between premium and regular will probably be around two bucks per gallon, or $32 difference if you fill a 16 gallon tank..

When I fill up my tank usually takes around 10-11 gallons. I can afford an extra 2-3, sometimes 4 dollars a fillup to make sure my car runs the way it's supposed to.

Premium is worth it, and you're exactly right. Your brother is mistaken. On a car designed to squeeze every last bit of power out of fuel without FI, it's worth paying an extra 10% in fuel to get the extra few percent in power. Likewise, on the S2000, it's worth paying extra for performance tires.

For the minivans and SUVs many CNN readers own, premium fuel and R compound tires are probably a waste, but for an S2000, it certainly is worth the difference.

Tell your brother he needs to sell the minivan and get a sports car, then he'll understand.

Ok, I stand corrected. But, as long as my memory goes back (85c a gallon) it seems like it's always been that way.

My brother sent me this article because he thinks that I'm wasting money by using premium; especially with the gas prices being so high. I try to tell him that s2000s has a very high compresion motor and its not good to use a low octane gas.. of course, he doesn't buy it.

How do you guys feel about this article?

yahoo linky
So start running on regular and report how it goes. Honda probably knows more about their engines than your brother. Riding the ping sensor will probably result in lower performance and lower gas mileage due to the engine constantly going retarded in its timing, and increased engine wear due to the engine undergoing detonation. If you really want to run on regular, get a thicker head gasket like comes with some turbo kits to lower the compression.

I hate to think what a gallon of gas is going to cost when you're my age.
