Closest thing to Elise in the USA?

Scot - the current rumors for the US-spec Elise are that it will cost $38-39K. The Celica GTS motor is the front-runner as well.
I'm not sure if Sun is doing the car anymore either. The car is not "legal" in all definitions of the word.
The Elise 190S is about 1500lbs with 190hp. There are about 40 of these in the country. Look and you can find them used. Now the problem is that pesky license plate thing.....

I probably wouldn't choose the Elise as a daily driver either - but it makes a great second car.
I believe the current plan is to only sell 2-3K Elises in the US per year. Not many people can tolerate driving such a "bare bones" car. I can and I probably will if the car comes here.

There are Lotus Elises for sale here in the US. Auto Europe in Birmingham, MI has a nice blue one for sale as I type.
I saw a yellow one in Ann Arbor last Friday as well. I think they're asking about $45k for them though. For that price perhaps you'd like the B18C5 powerplant with Sun...
There also more than a few Lotus Seven/Caterhams in the immediate vicinity as well. I think Auto Europe sold those cars as well.

No, your eyes do not deceive you, those ARE TWO (yes, 2) Kawasaki ZX12 engines...
oh, and 4WD, 6-spd sequential gearbox...
0-60 in 2.8s, and to 100 in 6.3s
it's kinda quick
