Cheaper daily and nice sports car or vice versa?

I would say if you dont mind manual, Focus RS or STI would also be very fun for a DD when you arent in major traffic. I decided I did not want a manual again for a DD due to traffic, so I got the S3.
Also, I was considering a Lexus GX460 SUV, just if you need another choice

I am about your size as well and I find the seats in the Golf to be just about perfect, if you can't find a Golf R to sit in, the GTI has the same seats.

+1 on the golf r. I used to have a mkv r32 before I got the s2000 and miss that car for the simple fact that I drove it everyday. Although s2000 is more fun, you get to drive it only for a few miles in a week.
I recently got a Mercedes e350 wagon as a replacement for an MDX and I feel much better driving now. It's fun, practical and super comfortable for DD activities.
Cheers

I've never been a fan of the garage queen concept. Why put a whole bunch of your money into a car that you only enjoy a few times a month? I enjoy having a fun sports car that I drive every day. But I'm seriously considering a less expensive, more practical vehicle as a backup beater that I can use when I need something with a little more practicality.

Get an SRT8 grand cherokee. At least it would have tons of power then which would make it a lot more fun to drive than your standard SUV.
I know this is an extreme nit-pick but I REALLY hate the ride height of a crossover. It's so awkward to me, I hate the height of the Rav... it's not a car but it's not the height of an SUV either, and I actually see the advantages first hand with loading the kids in and out it's the perfect height to do that but when I'm driving it I hate it so much. The SRT8 Grand is lowered and is around the same ride height as the Rav, it may bother me.
If I was in the market for a new SUV I would buy it.

Yup. BMW'a in general are the perfect dual purpose car for the car enthusiast. When I had my e92 m3, I took it to the track, stuck my mountain bike on the top rack, and even as a coupe had plenty of room in the back for a reverse facing Recaro infant seat. It was comfortable enough to take my family on long trips, and tons of fun when driven hard. The same goes for their SUV's. Very fun to drive...for an SUV, but still practical.
