cheap rwd: Miata
start out low power: Miata (also has much potential with T/C apps)
learn the basics: Miata (great to learn on)
fun autocrossing: you'll have fun while winning with Miata

Rx-7 comes a close second as you can also race in a spec series later on. e30 BMWs will be a PITA to service/repair, especially M3. 240sx sounds fun...maybe JDM Silvia conversion and t/c apps.

i had a miata for four years and it was a wonderful car. the fun factor multiplied with the cheap to own and buy factor makes it a huge winner.

1st generation RX-7s are cool cars, but they aren't competitively classed in SCCA Solo, so an RX-7 would be a bad choice if you plan to get get serious about autocrossing. As noted, there is a spec RX-7 road racing series, though (PRO7?).

I wouldn't recommend an E30 3-series for autocross -- they have a tendency to roll over when subjected to repeated transitions. And an E30 M3 would cost about three times the stated $5k budget.

Surprised nobody flamed me. Miata is a good car, no doubt, I just don't know if I could personally drive one. That car is way too ... cute.

another vote for the MR2, or how about the old Corolla? Or are those too popular due to the JDM Drifter fanboi effect?
