cheap rwd car
hey, im entertaining the possibility of purchasing a cheap rwd car this summer...obviously i have a jetta and am looking to go rwd for a second car however i want to start out low power, try to learn the basics of the set up first and also have some fun autocrossing it, then think higher power...i was thinking miata or perhaps an old na rx7(like first gen) or bmw 3 series...looking for somehtng less than 5k and that wont require lots of work (so mabey no 3 series, and by old i mean like the model before e36, not sure of designation) anyway, what are your thoughts

No man should drive a miata, my vote is for a 240sx. You can do so much engine wise to a 240sx. It's probably fair to say it's the biggest enthusiast car in Japan for lower budgets, and it has a nice following here in the states in autocross/drifting/and just general modding.

Miata - it's lighter, more tossable, and generally more reliable. It's also a better auto-x car (in stock form) than a 240SX.

An old 300zx?
240sx?
Mustang baby!!!! (switchblade in sock is optional).
Not sure if any old BMW if reliable??
I did see a 50k mileage Miata for $3500 in my local paper about a year ago.

Yet another vote for the Miata. They're cheap, reliable, and take you all the way to an autocross national championship if that's where you want to end up one day. They're also great fun to drive, and can be easily modified as your needs and budget allow.
240s are ok as well, but they'll be less fun to drive, aren't as well suited to autocross, and I imagine you'll have a hard time finding a good one under $5k.

If you become series about racing the miata, there is the spec. miata class.
Since we have estabished that this is your play/autocross toy. You can purchase a spec. class miata for a song. Purchase from someone leaving the class and
get a ready made race car with spare parts.

Even an old LT1 fbody would make a decent RWD car as they're so cheap and easy to modify with parts readily available.
