Cheap fun ideas

Miata is really a killer deal in terms of fun per dollar.. The Greddy turbo kit doesn't add a whole ton of power but IIRC it's crazy cheap for a turbo kit. Like, $1200 or something.
I had a '91 Miata with coilovers and sticky tires and that car was a blast. Way more tossable than my S2k. Sure, it was slow, but it never bothered me when I was driving that car. Ironically, my SC'ed S2000's lack of torque bothers me more than my ~100HP Miata's lack of power ever did.

I've been in the same boat for a while now, all I gotta say is good luck.

My Miata only runs 5psi and it is definately fun. It's not FAST but it is quick and you don't get the feeling it's slow like a stock miata does. Also, the turbo that comes with the Greddy kit is the best part of the kit and it is good for 250 WHP with supporting mods (Exhaust, Intercooler, Injectors, and a tune).
