Default Cheap Cars with Good Power/Weight?

I'd like to pick up another car for a few grand that is manual (of course) and has a fairly good power to weight ratio. It'd be swell if it didn't blow up constantly too. Any recommendations?

The most obvious car - a fan favorite here in car chat - is a Miata.

Check out the MR-S. 03+ models have great reliability, and are great to drive stock. It is common to see 2zz swaps in them, most swapped cars don't get that expensive either. Good luck!

Love Miatas. But it's not exactly the first car I think of for power-to-weight!

I'd rather have a Miata, but if power/weight for cheap $$$ is what you want, LS1 Camaro. (noooo!)

old american sports cars might fit the bill if heavy is ok--an F-body for instance.

Are old corvettes with low mileage unreliable money pits?

Atleast from my friends experience. Not so much the motor, but body parts/panels/seals and suspension. I'm talking C4 and below. Can you even get corvettes for a few grand?

My friends C4 was strange. It was a low car, but you had to step over this high "wall" to get into it. Picture stepping into a bucket. You gotta raise your leg up high first and etc. Minor detail..just an ovservation. Looks nice though.

yeah... Corvettes would be out of the question... C4 vettes are already starting to go up in value... a C4 in good condition will cost you around $10k, if not more... If you do have the money for it though, you wouldn't have to worry about depreciation but, 10 grand isn't quite "a few grand"
