What about a 2002 Mazda 626? Any opinions.

I found a 2004 Subaru Impreza sedan with 88,000 miles listed for 5500. Sounds promising. Gonna go check it out tomorrow.

Haha, its actually for my brother and its his second car. His first car was a hand me down with a lot of miles and existing issues. The Impreza looks to be in good shape and its less than 10 years old and has less than 100,000 miles which is pretty good for 5 grand. I think they are pretty reliable maybe not as reliable as Honda/Toyota because of AWD/boxer engine though. We will see, I know he is hoping to spend even less but everything else under 5k has 200k miles on it plus this one is original owner/clean title.

Oops, I didn't read the posting too thoroughly, it would certainly make a great car second for a college student as well! Subaru is indeed known for its reliability, at least the majority of its NA lineup. I may consider getting an Impreza of some form myself when the SUV I'm driving starts having issues.

Finding the right car can be a daunting task in the $5,000 range. I remember checking out a fairly well kept 1997 Prelude SH priced closer to $6,000 a few months before purchasing my S2000 and it felt like a great car for the money, including respectable performance and it was actually fun to drive. The reason I passed on it is that I decided it would be a better idea to spend all of my money on my car, and I'm still glad I did if not simply because of the great S2000 community I've become associated with.

Uh, everywhere? My 92 hatch had under 100k when I bought it for well under $5k. I see them on craigslist everyday.

I didn't realize we were reviewing 20 year old cars for first buy. I guess I wouldn't touch a 20 year old car. Unsafe to get in a crash with.

Integra coupe. I bought mine from a friend who drove it from 40k miles until 190k, I bought it and drove it from 190-239k, just put a clutch in it during that time. It was on the original clutch. 2001 integra LS. Bought it for $2500, drove it 50k miles, put clutch in it, sold it for $2500. I still see it running around. Fun to drive with the 5 spd and hatch for hauling, great gas mileage. I miss it now actually.

I doubt much of anything that is equally reliable, cheap, and economical will be any safer. You can't have everything for under $5k, that's not how it works. OP said "Main considerations are reliability and economy." He didn't say he was looking for a rolling fortress.

Pontiac Vibe. It's essentially a Matrix and is incredibly good on gas + spacious.
