If he has been financially responsible most of his life, he could have a fair amount of retirement savings, owns his house, and otherwise have no debt. He will get a very good debt to asset ratio in his credit report, and seen as having low risk.
He may be depressed only because he cannot bring in the money like he used to, not because he is poor.

Sad friggin story, but I think he embellished the story just a bit, and he may have a great credit score.

I know a guy who was considered a total loser in HS and arrived at his 20-year reunion in a 40ft coach conversion with color-matched trailer and Rolls Royce. He just couldn't resist - he's not usually the flashy type at all.

Maybe he DID lie on his application, and then to your dad. That would make a lot more sense than a dealer financing a hot-selling model to a deadbeat with no income during a credit crunch.
if you cant prove that you can afford the monthly payment, rent/morg, living expenses, 98% of places will deny you a loan.
