How reliable are early to mid 90's BMW's engine and tranny wise? How about electronics? Are they good cars to buy used today?

Seems like he wants an AWD stealth car, it'd be better (and cheaper) to get a new Legacy turbo and mod it up to STi levels. IMO.

what i really wanted was a naturally aspirated bmw s4. I need the awd for winter, but i did not know that there was a supercharger available. this might be the way to go .

Check out the Hartge 5.0 liter V8 engine over 400 horse... if you do a swap, do something orginal. You can definately tweak 30-40 more rwhp NA wise out of the S54, but I just saw a vid of the Hartge 5.0 liter V8 400+ horse in a E46 3 series chassis, damn fast and torque like crazy...

As clayman said....

I had a few friends look into this.....

Take a brand new 330.....

Take a brand new M3.

Drop the m3 drivetrain into the 330....

You spent about $27,000 more on the 330 than the M3. (thats an UNDERestimate.)

Exactly why I said might as well not waste time and money... and just buy the real thing.

But a Hartge H50 swap would be ill! Check that vid... 5.0 l 400++horse V8
