Thanks, I was about to post this. The problem cooling years were 2015/2016. 2017 GM fixed it. And from what I have read (been looking at both cars) pretty solid with the 2017 Z06 and ZL1 from the get go.

Improved it, not fixed it, based on what most owners will tell you (if they track the Z06). The ZL1 Camaro (for instance) is supposedly very, very good at keeping temps under control but it has a lot more frontal area to provide airflow (it shares its engine with the Z06). The ZR1 Vette is supposed to be very good as well but it has a lot more air flow openings on the front as well (the chief engineer said it was basically all airflow with absolute bare minimum structure to keep the shape of the front bumper).

The Z06 has much improved cooling for the MANUAL transmission models but the automatic transmission models apparently couldn't fit the same upgrades for cooling so again, beware the automatics (both for cooling issues and torque converter issues).

Thanks for the reply guys. From what I read online, most of the overheating problems were those who tracked their car (which I, like 95% of z06 owners, will not do), are the 2015-2016 models, or had the automatics (which I will never get regardless, because man pedal/race car). If I am getting the z06, it will pretty much be what my s2k is right now: a weekend car, with a few spirited drives at the local twisties where I live. I already have a commuter car, so everyday driving for the Z would be out of the question.

My 14 crystal red C7 vert was delivered to my house six years ago tomorrow. My thoughts (which haven't changed) at the time:

I've been keeping tabs on the c7, frankly it's really under appreciated. Like Jonboy, I'd go GS, the power of the z06 just isnt useable on the street without risking jail time.

Improved, from my friend that owns one, he says fixed. He isn't a "hey check out how big my track dick is" kind of guy. He hits Cresson, Eagles Canyon, and COTA, probably once each per year. In his 20-25 minute session he hasn't had any issues, is this is TX heat and humidity. He traded a '15 or 16 for a 2018 and already in cahoots to buy a C8 that he said he will also trade once the Z06 version is prevalent but is none too happy about no manual.

If you bought a Z06 automatic and you're a track guy, well to me that's on you.

Same goes for any literbike for the last 25-30 years. You just have to have the experience and use it where you can. I've risked jail time for over 20 years now on my sportbikes but extremely mitigated due to using a V1, a HUD, riding in the country, and knowing my terrain, hiding spots, etc. Not everywhere is commiefornia. I feel for you guys out there. I use the acceleration, especially out of corners, but rarely use the top end. Same goes for my local tracks. Few tracks have the long straight at COTA.

Who is this guy? I'm a regular at the same tracks and, frankly, 85% of people aren't driving hard enough to make the C7Z06/7 to overheat in the first place.

Matt, you're one of the top percent of guys who could overheat a C7 Z06 with how you drive, but the majority of C7 Z06 owners especially the improved 2017+ manual Z06's are perfectly fine and happy with the Z06 and it's cooling capabilities. It doesn't make sense to crap all over the Z06 for it's inadequate cooling for the top % of guys when most don't have any issues.

I wasn't happy my C6 ZR1 would get hot with extended track sessions, but I learned to deal with it. Now that I track a 991.2 GT3 cooling issues are a thing of the past. Hottest temps I've ever seen at COTA in the dead of summer is around 200F coolant and 235F oil temp. That's running mid 2:20's with everything stock besides a center muffler delete, so wringing the car out.

Bottom line: if you get a C7 Z06, get the 2017+ manual (which appears to be your plan) and you'll probably be okay in most situations.
