Default Buying an old bike

I am talking early 70s-mid 80s Japanese bikes. 100-500cc. In the general line of a 79' Yamaha XS 400 to 1971 Suzuki Enduro 125. I realize there is a huge amount of variation within this range (essentially three manufactures and a decade worth of models) but I am wondering if anyone has any general advice; primarily with the difficulty in sourcing parts. Which bikes of this vintage are particularly noteworthy (or should be avoided)?

I am just helping out my brother who is buying his first bike. And well, this is the type of bike he really wants. Of course, if you all think this is a horrible idea in general, please let me know.

As I first bike I would have to advise against it. While I am just starting out riding myself, I can't imagine the servicing/reliability difficulties actually trying to drive a bike like that would entail. Not to mention it would be difficult to find one with any real amount of servicing history, with the exception of what would be considered a collectors bike.

Early 70s to mid 80s covers A LOT of ground. For the knowledge you're looking for you prob want to be on a motorcycle-specific forum.

Seems like every decade there were major improvements. I wouldn't reach back past the mid-80's for a first bike and even there part costs could eat you alive. Just price a replacement handlebar starter switch or wheel for example.

Why so set on going back past mid-90's? Prices have to be low enough on those, especially in the small bikes that interest you.
