Subaru's are as reliable as a Honda in my mind. I wouldnt worry about that with an STi.
Since cost is the lowest factor, it really just comes down to do you want
4 doors/seats, AWD, interior room, fast in a straight line but can hold its own around corners
OR
convertible, RWD, fast around corners but can hold its own in a straight line
Neither car is "cheap" to mod (Evo's are another story but those I would worry about reliability). STi's are a bit more rare, but they've only been available since 2004 so there shouldnt be as many on the road as there are S2000's.
If money hadn't been a problem for me, I'd be in an STi right now, but when I test drove the S and couldnt stop thinking about it for almost a month and saw the price was over $5k less than an STi, that all but sealed it for me. And I still smile every time I drive it.
