Buying a car out of state, what do i need to take with me?

Not always. In TX the seller can choose to scrape the registration sticker off the windshield and keep the TX plates to force the buyer to register it in their name. You can however get a temp 5 day transfer tag online with the VIN of the car to get it home though.

Ok, done this a bunch of times and I live in CA too.
1) The only document you actually need to drive it home is the Bill of Sale. You have 7 days to get the vehicle from where ever you buy it back to California.
2) you should obviously have insurance from the time you pick up the car.
3) Your bank is going to want to see a copy of the title before they lend you money. They will also want to see the registration.
4) If you are buying the car from TX, I believe (don't quote me) that Texas registration goes with the car, so the buyer will likely have the registration with the car when he sells it to you.
5) When you enter CA, you will need to have the car inspected (can do at DMV or AAA), smogged and then when you have title from previous owner, you will title, register and pay taxes in CA.
