Buying car in Costa Rica, need advice...
Hey all. My wife and I are going to move to Costa Rica for four months and we want to buy a 4X4 while we are down there rather than rent a car. Does anyone on here know where I can go to find good deals? (see: not craigslist as it is targeted to ignorant Americans who will pay too much)

It has been a few years since I was down in CR, but I do remember that the cars offered in San Jose are not like the cars offered in the States.
I can't think of any advice to give you other than, buy a Toyota 4x4 - they seemed to be the most common of the newer trucks. There was something that resembled a 4Runner. There was also a really cool Isuzu Pick-up truck double cab, but I doubt that still exists.
And you definitely need a 4x4 down there - which part are you moving to?

Nissan Patrol is popular 4X4 in Latin America.

Cars are nasty expensive in Costa Rica due to import tariffs. You must get a 4x4 to get anywhere. Suzukis are probably the cheapest 4x4 you can get your hands on. Toyota's are the top of the heap but you will pay for it. I'd get a mid-90's Toyota/Nissan if possible. You can probably break even on it when you leave as they are in high demand.

I can't really offer any advice that hasn't been mentioned, but I just got back from CR and you will see Suzukis, Toyotas, and OLD Range Rovers everywhere. While I agree that the roads outside of the city are really rough, the most common car you will see down there is the Hyundea (sp?) Accent. I am sure it's due to the cost, gas, and reliabilty. There is a lot of construction going on on the roads from San Jose to the beaches, so in due time the roads will be a little smoother. Good luck. CR is a beautiful place. I am going back in 2-3 weeks for business.

When my wife, my sister and brother-in-law and I were there last year, we rented a Nissan Patrol. I have seen plenty of 4Runner 4X4's on CL, but they were mid to late 90's models going for in the mid to high teens. I am leaning toward buying a 4Runner but I want to make sure I dont get raped on the price. We are going to be staying in Manuel Antonio/Quepos and will be exploring the country from there.
