Thanks for the answers guys.
YOu are right that there is Nothing like a 911 turbo.
The GT3 is a great car, but it'd be a waste on me because I"m not a track guy, but a convertible guy.
The GTR is not a porsche.
I think this is the first year for the 997 Turbo Cab. That's a 140k car at least. It will be a while till it drops to 80k. I could get a 996 turbo cab (i've seen one and I almost wrecked while staring at it.) and then get a 997 turbo cab later.
I'd rather though get one car to last me like 10 years. Rather than buying 2 expensive deprecating items.
WE'll see. Thanks for the feedback.

In California, I'd get a 997 C2S. Drove one and it was fun and engaging. I'm sure not as sporting as a GT3, but for "date night" with the wife on a beautiful day, that'd be my choice.
Most other places in the country I'd pick 996 Turbo.

You guys keep recommending coupes even though Raj states clearly that he wants a convertible
I would go with a C2s. You will have more choices vs. a C4s. You don't need AWD in So Cal. Plus the extra cost/weight makes it more of a pig. The 996 is hideous IMHO. The 997 is a significant improvement in interior and exterior design. Again IMHO.
Finally go drive one - you will either love it or not. That will help you decide. Most Porsche dealers are quite friendly. They might not let you drive a 997TT or a GT3 but a C2s is a different crowd. Call or email one of their sales person's so that you call schedule a testdrive.
Good Luck.

i voted 996 turbo cabrio...
but I think it depends on what you'd like to do with it--- are you looking for a cherry example to be left alone? in that case, I think I'd look for the right 997 c2s and would jump on it (I much prefer the 997 to the 996 in a lot of dimensions - the improvements are fairly substantial, but I like the parts market for the 996 turbos *quite* a lot).
Bilstein or KW coilovers, quality exhaust (milltek, cargraphic, awe, etc) and possibly a reflash = :~)
(all the while I lambast myself for thinking about messing with a good thing - it's probably for the best that I'm a ways away from owning a porsche... let alone having the dough to modify one)

997, for the new front end alone.

I just talked to one of my business partners who is in the same boat, except he's getting a hardtop. I guess he found a c4s that isn't loaded to the gills with options he doesn't want.. I agree with mdxluvr, the c2s is probably the better choice for So cal.
So i guess ill get a 997 c2s.
now what color? I'm thinking speed yellow with natural leather color interior, or red with that interior.
I don't like black cars, too painful to take care of. I am tired of silver/gray cars.
