The outside of the car says Carrera (I thought i heard someone say it meant race in Spanish or something). The 993 was the last air cooled carrera, the 996 is the current and the 986 is the Boxster. On Porsche's website they do say "911 Turbo" etc so I'm not sure how that works in... It's like how BMW has the E36 and E46.

For me, it doesn't really matter what its called..
Every MFG. has there own thing Ferrari and Daimler have numerical monikers that are based on some fact. 308, 328, 348 etc. SL55, E420..
Uninspiring..but I don't buy a car becasuse of the name..if the F360 was called the Ferrari Assmobile..I'd still give my left nut for one.

I think that the NSX should definitely be renamed. It originally had a dash in it like this, NS-X, and stood for New Sports car eXperiment. This sorta makes sense as the NSX was such a revolutionary car, and at least to my knowledge, Honda had never done anything like this. The NSX's replacement isn't really going to be an experiment, unless Honda does something really wild with it... ...like detuning a F1 engine for the street (hint-hint). But anyway, the best suggestion I've seen for the second gen. NSX, or rather its name, is the "Senna." Makes sense to me. I wonder what American Honda would do if that were to happen.
