Default Brand new 1987 Buick Regal GNX

Pretty cool old/new car. I might grow a mullet and make an offer.

I still don't understand the appeal...

Yes its fast but its an 80's Buick - its hideous!! I know a guy with T-Types/GN/GNXs - all of his are under 50K miles, some as low as 10-20K... I just don't understand.

I love them. I can't explain exactly why though. Some cars are just more than the sum of their parts. Aside from the fact that they were faster than pretty much all of their peers at the time, there is an understated elegance to the design of the GN and GNX that is timeless to me. T-types, etc. that look like regular Regals however, are nowhere near as cool in my eyes.

I knew someone who owned a GNX in the early 90's. It was a great engine in a horrible chassis. The thing accelerated like a raped ape in a straight line but that was about all it could do. The flexible flyer, body on frame construction produced lots of chassis flex. The stamped steel A-arms up front were low tech even for the late 80's while the solid rear axle was an excellent example of Detroit clueless design in that era. The brakes were OK for the day but nothing special. And the styling...eeeyuuck! That front end was hideous and the overall packaging efficiency produced a big car with not much room inside. The seats were basically flat "buckets" which was OK because the thing couldn't generate much lateral acceleration and the steering sucked with way too much boost.

It's really a shame GM didn't pursue the boosted V6 for the Vette or some other worthy platform. The engine was a winner and would probably still be competitive today.

The results were impressive for the era. With 276 horsepower and tons of torque jetting to the wheels, the GNX could go from zero to 60 in 4.7 seconds. It was as quick as a contemporary Porsche 911 Turbo, for about half the price.

The similarities ended there, however. In its review, Car and Driver magazine complained that the GNX "rattles and bounces like bolts in a blender."

I've owned a four turbo Buick cars... a turbo T (bare bones Regal... bench seat, AM radio, roll up windows - best and rarest of the bunch), a 86 GN, an 87 GN, and the 89 TTA... every one of them was a blast to drive... true, point and shoot cars, and praise Allah if you had to turn or stop in a hurry)... but you know what... in their day there was nothing faster out of Detroit... so fast that they put Chevy's panties in a knot because they could wax a Corvette... they were bullet proof and for less than two grand in mods you could have a car that would run all night long at the track in the mid to low 12's... they were the only American cars I've ever owned in my life... had to have an ISF so sold the '87 and my s2k for a super Camray. ...

Anyway... had to put my two cents worth in to the thread... the car made total sense to me ... they were the essence (especially the Turbo T) of what the early American muscle cars were all about... definately a fun ride...
