True that
I wonder if Porsche has something in the works in order to compete with the new Elise?
$20k more for a Boxster S and it cant even sniff an Elise at the track.

[QUOTE]How much are you willing to wager? When it comes down to it, you'd take your money and run before you put it on the Boxster to match the S2000 in any road course or autocross. There is no mistake that the base Boxster WILL get spanked on any course or autocross. If you have no experience with autocross or road course, please don't speak out of your ass.

BTW 90% of cars are not taken to the track, so "track times" are mostly academic. I mean in a sense if the Boxster is more functional (daily driver) than a S2000 or Elise and that's what 90% of cars are used for.

Of course I'd pick an S2000 over the base Boxster. It is much more fun to drive; I've driven a base Boxster quite a few times, and it's not on the same par as an S2K.
NOW, if we're talking bout a Boxster S, I may pick it over an S2K. There are HUGE differences between the base and Boxster S, not just the bigger engine and hp, but improved suspension and almost everything else.
But for now, I'd pick the S2K over the base Boxster. Before I purchased the S2K, the base Boxster was on the list also, but after extensive test-drives, it didn't do it for me. The Z3 was also on my list. But needless to say, it didn't come close to being picked.

I would wager that if taken around a track, that the Boxster and S2000 would post very similar lap times.

I don't know if you've ever auto-x against one or not, but I can tell you that the BASE Boxster is not even close in terms of performance.

Consensus in the autocross community is that the S2000 is slightly faster than the Boxster, but it's by no means a night-and-day difference, and it took us several years to figure this out conclusively. What the Boxster lacks in top-end power it gains back in handling -- you can pull stunts in a Boxster that would be inadvisable in an S2000 because it's so much friendlier at the limit. As a result, it's easy to jump into a Boxster and go fast, but that's not the case for an S2000; I'd speculate that a lot of people would go faster in a Boxster than an S2000 for that reason.
A Boxster won B Stock at this year's Houston National Tour, and Boxsters took a quarter of the BS trophies at last year's Nationals. There's a proposal on the table to move the Boxster up to AS along with the S2000. Not bad for a car that's "not even close".
I'll grant that, on an open track, the S2000's power advantage would spell doom for the Boxster.
