BMW - the ultimate vending machine
Remember when BMW was about the ultimate driving machine? How about the ultimate vending machine?

BMW wants to give owners of its cars the option to access specific hardware and software features through a subscription (via Autoblog). BMW hasn't detailed exactly how the service will work, but the short version is that the automaker would offer select driver-assistance and comfort features in exchange for a reoccurring fee.

ok. If that's the case, let me order my BMW all the way bare bones with cloth seats, no sound deadener, no sunroof, no BS luxury accoutrements, no lane keeping assist, no self driving, no power seats, no automatic trans, and I'll take the LSD, big engine and be done and done.

That has to be lamest thing I've heard an auto manufacturer do. I read about that a few weeks ago.

They did or tried the same thing with CarPlay. Owners made a massive fuss (don't recall if there was a lawsuit) about having to pay monthly. Ultimately BMW relented and enabled it.
All automobile mfr's want to move to subscription based services. Everyone is trying to do it. See streaming apps. What silicon valley does today the vehicle mfr's want to do tomorrow.

Add that to the ever growing list of reasons I have not nor will not own a BMW! But the BMW hardcore fanboys will eat it up and will come up with all sorts of reasons this is not a big deal so they will still sell tons of cars either way.

I get a subscription to enabling additional content, software, or services, but not for devices and hardware that is already installed.
I am not a BMW buyer, so what I think has little merit to them, but I cannot be alone on this.

They do. They are even worse though. You cant legally work on a Tesla. Only Tesla can work on your Tesla. They skirted the laws in many states that say a manufacturer MUST provide the same tools their dealerships use to private shops by stating they do not have "dealerships" and only sell direct. Aka they consider their places they sell cars (you know ... dealerships) something else and thus do everything in their power to keep anyone else from repairing their cars and they will not provide info or tools to do it. I kinda like Tesla, but if that does not change I will never own one, period. Trying to basically kill off private shops is something other mfgrs have been slowly trying to do for years and now Tesla is taking it to a whole new level. Maybe it is because I am the son of a mechanic that owns his own shop, but I will not support that kind of garbage. I pay for a product, it is mine and I should be able to have anyone I want work on it. You can not warranty that work and that is fine. But trying to say that since I bought your product, that it is never really mine completely is horse shit. Property taxes are bad enough in that way Its worse than frickin HOAs!
