I spotted a black 1 series hatchback today on San Fernando Street in Burbank. It was going the other way so I did not get to see the model number. Doesn't look bad but not my style. My wife liked it though and said it was cute. It looked much smaller than my A3.

...BMW does not pose a healthy attitude to V6 engines instead enjoying the smooth transition of power you can only get with six-cylinder power.

The hatchbacks are not planned for the U.S. What you guys saw was a mule doing testing. This car has been doing testing for almost 2 years now.

Update: I spotted the black hatchback again today in Burbank, CA. It was a 120i with a 4 cylinder. It had Mexico tags on it with a bar code on the top.

It looks really tiny. The guy driving it looks like he is squished in there. It will be interesting though based on the weight/ power ratio. The 3 series coupe is more of a GT cruiser and the M3 is going to be priced pretty high. If this comes in around 35k, I would consider it.

I feel they are aiming for the Evo/Sti/350Z entry level sports car market. approx 300hp around $30k+ with the M1.
The rest of the 1 series is going after the Mazda 3, Lancer, and Impreza market. approx 140 - 230hp around $20k
I think it's a great entry level market that the 3 series/ M3 has priced itself out of. The current 3 series reminds me of the 5 series of the 90's
Sweep
ps. anyone have more pictures???
