The original M1 was a failed attempt to build a race car it came to late and the rules were changed for the series it was intended to be entered in.

Unless im mistaken the S54 inline 6 from the M coupe and last generation M3 no longer meets the emission requirements of all 50 states therefore BMW will not/cannot use it in the new 1 series. Its rumored that this will also be the last year for the M Coupe/Roadster if they do not decide to put the new V8 from the e90/92 M3 in it.

It would be stupid for BMW to name it anything other than "M1". There are only a few 'purists' that even remember (or care) that the original M1 ever happened. They want to sell this car to the masses, they'll only confuse people if they call it anything else.

this will be a kickass car, who cares what badge is on it?
Not true. As you can see even by the posts here that BMW has a following for the M1. Lots of factory history with the M1 name.
My guess is it will be something like a CSL tag.

Then what engine will the M1 have?

The turbo 6 from the 335?

My sources say that there WILL be a 135i and a M1 with a revamped, rebuilt engine from the E46 M3. The car will also have the carbon-fiber roof, and have all the typical M treatment. Its going to be designed to fulfill the gap left by the M3 since pricing just leaped over 10,000.

So just imagine an E46 M3 thats about 300 pounds lighter with an updated engine. There ya go.

I'd like to hope BM don't start to cheapen the M range with a 1Series.

A 135i to replace the 130 would be good enough.

Haven't seen any talk of an RS3 from Audi. Probably a good thing.
