This a question that I'm asking regarding the 3 series vs. A4.
Which one would you choose with regards to reliability and overall value, including residual.
Thanks.

Tough call. My e90 330i was not much different that my buddy's A6 Avant in terms of reliability. Both spent time in the shop under warranty fixing odd expensive stuff. True, that both are 'last generation' platforms.
I'd pick the BMW again only because I liked my local dealer more than he liked ANY of the Audi dealers he used.

BMW has been the only German company rated above industry average for years.

328i or 335i? Based on what I've been seeing, the 328 is quite a bit more reliable than the 335. Tough to say though as it could boil down to the 335i being driven much harder on average.
I do understand there are different models i.e. 328, 330, 335 etc. same goes for audi...but most of the other components other then the actual powertrain are almost the same in all of the cars.
yes, I picked the BMW, but I had a hard time choosing that over the audi. I also beleive that residual value is a lot higher as well.

BMW is a reliable brand... problem is the maintenance is several times as expensive as American or Japanese cars and when stuff does go wrong its more expensive to fix. If you can turn a wrench you can even out those costs a lot by buying the parts online and bypassing the outlandish labor rates. Even if it's just oil changes and brake pads you can save 75% on what a stealer would charge.

2001 5 series, $4,900 in repairs and maintenance over 2 years and 25k miles. That was written in late in 2004... quite a bit for cash to keep a 3-4 year old car on the road.
