They're almost dead on in price and power, the BMW is fresher and more comfortable, the 911 is more of a sports car..

I voted "other" I don't think the 996 is all that exciting to drive. I really don't like some of the angles of the 645 - the very Chrysleresque rear...

I'd keep the S2000 and get a Prius for a beater and put the rest of the $$$ in my house.

Hmm. Power moonroof, power seats, luxury gadgets ad infinitum. I'd take a 911 over the BMW any day, but Jesu!

How the hell did the 911 become a such a grayheaded, Norah Jones listening, Viagra-popping, luxo barge? I remember a time when you could pick and choose gearsets for your Porsche - now you have eight hundred options for your faux carbon fiber veneer color-stitched and leather trimmed interior. Your only real choix, should you actually want a sports car instead of a Sharper Image catalog, is the ludicrously overpriced GT3. Shame, shame on them.

The 911 is way overpriced for what it is. My 00 had nothing but problems. The BMW 745i was just rated most problems on a car. The built quality of the germans is no more what it used to be.
Consumer Reports tests reveal:
German Car makers: 20 out of 100 car have problems
US Car makers: 18 out of 100 cars
and
Japanese: 12 out of 100 cars.

You draw your own conclusion.

the BMW is porky and bulbous looking, but the 911 is a 911, it's awesome!

I don't see this as a correct comparison. The 645 should be compared with the Masrati, or the Mercedes CL/SL, or the Jaguar XK8. The 911 is a sports car, the 645 is a GT cruiser. The 911 will be coming out shortly with the 997 version which should be a bit improved on the interior, and get a slight hp bump. With that said I am not getting another 911 after I return my current (996) off of lease. It is a great car, but like many said above the options list is ridiculous, and at retail it is overpriced. However today many, many people are getting $10K off list, which makes it a bit better in terms of value. I would get the 911 over the 645 anyday. The new BMW's have all been "Bangled" and they are not attractive cars.

Mutlu,

In regards to the statistic that was given by Consumer Reports, I saw an interview with the person running the survey, they did admit that European cars had far more technology in the cars than the American & Japanese cars so many of the problems were from the electronics, and the new technology. That said, the 745 is still a piece of "shiet."

Neither. And I agree the comparison is a bit off.

I don't like the looks of the narrow bodied 996's. Now the turbos ...

Ugh. Cars don't have to be EXACTLY the same to be cross-shopped or compared. The 645 is a sporty GT, and the 911 has become a GT-esque sports car, so the two may likely be cross-shopped by prospective buyers. Not to mention the fact that in this range, most buyers consider many other factors besides pure performance (image and perceived prestige, anyone?).

So, I would take a 997 Carrera 2 (preferably the S model that Autoweek is speculating about) over the 645 any day of the week and twice on Sunday. The 645 is just too much of a barge (I think it's at least 190" long), and Bangle Bimmers leave me totally cold. But, I would likely take a Z51 C6 over either and pocket the nearly $30K in savings.

let's see $68K+ 320+HP 2+2 German sporty coupe/GT. Seems like a fair comparison. Both can have slushbox or MT.

True the 997 will be the better comparison and not a second too soon...

You guys don't think dentists wives drive just as many 911s as true track jocks?

You don't think porsche dealers are loosing sleep over the 645i?

I voted for the 645i. Might not be as fast as a 911, but like a 350Z v S2000 it's close, may be a drivers race.

R&T has them thus:

645i price as tested: $78K 0-60 5.3 sec 0-100 12.8 sec 1/4 mile 13.7@103mph
911 price as tested: $79K 0-60 5.0sec 0-100 12.2 sec 1/4 mile 13.4@105mph

645i braking from 80 = 196 ft skidpad = .93 Slalom = 66mph
911 braking from 80 = 204 ft skidpad = .92 Slalom = 67mph
