Default better to buy or to rent?

let's say one were to buy a F430 used ($175K).
in about a year it will depreciate about $15-20K, not including the maintenance.
you'll get about 2000 miles out of it or maybe 30 drives or $500-700/drive. if you drive more, the car unfortunately will depreciate more so it will still work out to be same $/drive.

you can get similar value rental (http://www.vipnvegas.net/images/mc_ferrari_red.html ($650/6hours) or https://www.vegasluxuryrides.com/lasVegasLu...CarRentals.html ($500/6hours)).

No headache of sale/resale and you get to rent a different car instead of being "stuck" with one car. But you get to have a sexy car sitting in your garage if you buy.

Another plus of renting is you don't need $200,000 to start with. You can go driving for $700 whenever you have some extra dough.

It's the same for airplanes, except those are easier to rent and usually a little cheaper.

Also much cheaper getting a hooker than getting married.

Except in Vegas, where it might be the other way around.

you tend not to get STD from car rental though, no matter how sexy the car is.

although I have to agree about marriage being expensive.

What you're forgetting is that if you go the renting route, you actually have to go rent the car before you drive it. You can't just spontaneously hop into the car and go for a drive.

Personally, buy > lease > rent

I am the buy type, but in this case I would say rent for the weekend. When you have some extra money and feel like driving a cool car. No big mo. payment if money gets tight.

Are we really debating the investment value of cars? Really?

Cars are a horrible investment. People buying Ferrari's aren't worried about the cost of ownership. Or the transverse: If you need to worry about the economics of it, you can't afford it.
