The new twin-turbo V8 in the new M5/6 and X5/6 will have LARGE shoes to fill in sound department. I hope they realized that.

I don't care for the E60 M5 exhaust at all. The only time it sounds good - and it does very good (although it isn't quite the note I'd go for in a 4000 lb sedan) - is when you're really on it. Which in something like the M5 is just about never, it's just too powerful to push it anywhere. Where the E39 M5 burbled in all the right ways the E60 M5 just has an unsatisfactory airy rattle.

After market exhausts just tend to make the M5 more. More frenetic aural pleasure and more low speed diesel rattle.

It only gets better with an aftermarket exhaust on the e60 m5. This one is my favorite so far:
