You can buy a great '94 or '95 Miata for $5-6K and have lots of money left over for other toys or improvements or...? If you're craving power and handy with a wrench, slap on one of the turbo kits and get 250 RWHP on a great sports car that weighs substantially less than the S2000...
Unless, of course, you are not looking for sports car in which case...get something else!

Go for the Miata! I bought a 93 Miata (70K mi) for $5000 last year. It was such a blast, that car influenced my decision to ditch my BMW M3 and go for the S2000. Had to sell the Miata to my bro who needed it for college. Oddly enough, I miss the Miata much more than the M3. I'm contemplating on buying another one for reason#2 stated below...
With the Miata, you can either:
1) dump the FMII turbo kit ($5k) and turn it into an S2000 killer with its 240 rwhp and lighter weight (~400 lbs)
2) convert it into a Spec Miata, race in SCCA, and turn in killer lap times that my M3 can only dream of.
I used to have a Porsche 944. Avoid it unless you love dumping money for maintenance.
The first generation BMW e30 M3 is also within that $10K price range. True racecar with rich motorsport heritage. Winningest touring car in history. The e36 and the new e46 M3s were built to compete in the marketplace. Racing was an afterthought for these cars. The e30 M3 was built to compete in races. It came to the marketplace because of homologation rules. Maintenance can be a headache.

you could possibly fidna high mileage 300zx tt 90-95, probably more like a 91 or 90, the aftermarket potential is great, and not really a fortune.. but maybe it could cost alot to maintain, i should know, which is why i work on my car myself most of the time.

Check out this months Grassroots Motor Sports magazine.
It's focus this month is choosing a car in the $5k, $10k, & $15k range.
They have selections for auto-x, rally, road course, daily driver, ....

Miata turbo. Last two auto-x these little cars could hang with the stock S, but they all mods all the way.
I looked for 300zx tt. expensive to maintain?maybe? But replace parts with high quality parts for the long run. These cars can be built up to handle 700hp. That is long term potential. A good used one would put you at 9k, I found several with replaced by the factory turbos, for under 10k and under 100k miles. TT and all wheel superhicas steering....sweet on the curves. this car held the 600 ft slalom record for a long time, because of the all wheel steering. The rear wheels only turn, I think an 1/8 of an inch, but that is enough.
