M5, its not 50 50 but best all around IMO if you want man trans. The E55 is fun as hell for an auto but imo, there are more E-class cars on the road than accords and you can not tell the difference at a glance from a E320 to an E55....

I'm trying to come up with the best compromise of performance, luxury, and price for under $40,000.

04' BMW M3 (70% sport; 30% luxury)
compromise of performance, luxury, and price along with convinence, space, and usability is the market the BMW M3 has created and owned for the last 20 years...

i wouldnt mess with that track record...

get the '04 with an extended warranty and call it a Sunday...

Those E39 M5's can be had for cheap compared to a E46 M3

I've always had a special place for the E39 M5, I consider more of a classic than the E46 M3 but the size and weight of the M5 makes it not as fun as the M3 and I until I have my own family, M5 is not at the top of the list.

Infiniti G35
MB C55 AMG (My friend just got one, and I loved riding in it. Fast and luxurious)

either of those spark your interest?

Slightly used 335i sedan can be had for less than 40k probably 38k.I paid 46k for my coupe new and that included sales tax.You still would have 3 years of free maintenance and a full warranty. You can buy a Juice Box performance mod for 379.00 and put 340 hp to the wheels.Best blend of sport and luxury.
