it truly matter on what you'r looking to get from your beater besides gas milage.
personally - for a beater, i want something very reliable. it's not going to be something glorious of couse and that's fine with me. i'd go for a brand off consumer reports most reliable brands list, and keep it small(that was u get better gas mileage, and chances r it'll b cheap). sure german's are known for making fun cars... but reliability is... ehh.... the nice thing about an older VW diesel would be a reliable engine but u'll b worrying about electronic issues.
corolla/civic always a good choice. old acura/lexus also good ideas. or like i have - a 94 geo prism. sure the geo lable is basically a chevy, but the geo prism is basically a rebadged corolla - toyota engine/trans/etc. g/l hunting!
