RDX? Easily under 40k (low 30s if you bargain); we drive ours in Minnesota and have never needed "more" AWD capability. Handles much more car-like than most SUVs, Honda reliability, and a slew of nice luxo features.

RDX. Not sure if you can get an MDX under 40, but they are really nice.

I have tested the new infiniti EX 35. I liked it. It is lower, AWD, a true crossover.

I agree with the folks talking Subaru. For $40k and under, you can pick from their entire line-up from the Tribeca to the Impreza sedan/wagon.

Subaru's are very reliable and outside the box.

We owned a Forester for years. It was rock solid until 75k when it decided to take a complete dump on us (vast majority were highway miles, too). Rebuilt tranny, brakes, etc - cost us >$4000 and that didn't even address the system-wide electrical problems we were having. We finally threw in the towel when we realized we needed a new pump, head gasket, and another alignment.
I know others have had great reliability longer-term w/ the Subies, but for us, it definitely didn't work out.

That's not a bad run! I know with all makes that there are a few in the batch that have issues.

Hopefully your stuff was covered under the warranty!

I enjoyed my previous experience with Subaru, and may find myself going back in the near future.

nope- the problems hit at 75k in 2004, so it was throwing cash into a car worth about as much as the repairs.

It just left a bad taste in my mouth because we followed the maintenance schedule perfectly, and it was mostly easy mileage. Some of the other cars we have in the fam have gone WAY past the 100k mark w/ zero issues (currently the most impressive is the inlaws' 1990 accord w/ nearly 300,000 miles w/ no substantial repairs).
