Great beginning bike. In fact, it was my first bike.
The riding stance is close enough to standard to be very comfortable. The bike isn't so heavy as to be unwieldy. The motor provides plenty of grunt to entertain even an experienced rider without making so much as to be scary. The brakes are good and it handles well. Best of all, its easy and cheap to own and maintain.
I was initially drawn to my 500 R because it looked much more like a sport bike than the Nighthawk 750 I considered and because I could easily put both feet down on the bike. I kept the bike a long time because it cost me nothing to run and frankly, it was a lot of fun even after I had been riding for more than a year.
My CBR600F3 was a lot, lot faster and braked, turned, etc. much better (as it should have for the price differential) but it wasn't as user friendly and in every day riding, the Kawi was an easier bike to live with.
