Default Before I Bought My S2000 I Looked At...

Hey all,

I'm looking to buy a fun car, and the S2000 is on my list. I'm looking mainly to get a 2002 (maybe 2003) S2000, but I am also looking at a new MazdaSpeed Miata, among others. I'm curious about what other cars S2000 owners looked at before settling on their Hondas. Any info, stories, opinions and facts are welcome, thanks.

RX8
G35
350Z
WRX
IS300

These seem to be the most common as they are the Japanese sports car competition. Very few may have looked at the SVT Mustang or GTO, but these are more straight line cars vs the more rounded above.

here's my list at that time (end of 2001):

i wasn't considering american and european cars, but here they are ...

miata - too small, no roll bar

MR2 spyder - no trunk, no roll bar

IS300 - 2 doors and 3 seats too many (at that time), poor gas milage

RSX Type S - too much like the beater that i already have (FWD coupe, just that everything is a lot better )

CL Type S - a little too big, 6 speed wasn't available yet

SE-R Spec V - [1st yr] 6 speed sucks, beam rear suspension, more doors and seats than i want, its a sentra

that's pretty much it

Well this was a couple of years ago but...

Miata: I'm 6'-1" and feel like a kid in a pedal car when sitting in a Miata, not to mention there is not enough head room with the top up.

MR Spyder: Can't get over the styling, has a funny looking side profile IMHO.

WRX: Decided to keep my Corsica, didn't want another four-door and was tired of waiting for the STi.

Camaro SS or WS6 Trans-Am: Not impressed with the build quality or reliability history and didn't want another Chevy. (Not that I dislike Chevy's, they were my favorite car make and still are, just wanted to taste a little Japanese. )

I considered a Boxster S and a Z4 3.0. Both seemed overpriced considering that the S2000 is the more focused sports car of the bunch. I wanted something fairly raw. I was (still am) on the list for an Elise but I didn't want to wait and I figured that the Lotus would be too far to the other extreme and virtually impossible to use as a daily driver. Lotus' reputation for problematic cars also put me off.

I bit on the S2000 because the '04 model gave me some more shoulder room and a little more torque. I like the build quality, the price and the decent level of depreciation.

When the warranty is up in 2007, and if I'm still hungry for 2 seater fun, I'll probably look at the Boxster Coupe as a logical replacement. I'll be older by then and might be ready for a less hard-core, mid-life crisis car that offers good performance & some civility. Time will tell.

350Z. And would have probablly bought one if they held their value better. I would have been happy with either the S or the Z

I was also considering the 350Z. At the time, few dealers had any in stock, and I didn't want to wait 3 months to order one.
