Barrett Jackson 2040
Hi guys.
I'm one of the older members here with my sports car roots going back to the 60s and experience with the cars of the 50s, 60s and 70s. I follow the collector car market a bit and I just got done watching the live Barrett Jackson Scottsdale auction on Speed. What most people don't know is that Arizona hosts three or four other auctions during the same week. Over $100M dollars worth of classic, antique and custom cars trade hands during this one week. The auctions that are not televised actually have some of the more interesting cars for sale. Most of the cars sold are from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Even the older cars from the 20s and 30s are typically modified hot rods as was popular in the 50s. While there were certainly a few more recent cars, about 90% were from the 70s or earlier.
Anyway, after watching the BJ event and reviewing the results of the other auctions on line, I got to wondering what the collector car market will be like 30 or more years from now. I thought this would be a good place to ask. By then, most of us baby boomers will be gone or too old to care. Younger folks, like most of you, will be at the age where you will be thinking of the cars of your youth and you will be in a position to add a collector car to the garage. Assuming then that the concept of collecting old cars continues, what do you think will be the desirable cars of 2040?

Some possibility that due to the complexity of, say, post-'75 cars, "classics" offered in the future built after date (or some other) date might be "survivors" more than "restored", unless something changes like someone offering -- for example -- some unversal-fit ECU that can be retrofitted to any car. Or maybe anything bigger than a Smart will simply have a 350 Chevy and 650 Holley.
Ealrier cars , I predict, will continute to be restored.
In 2040, except I might be dead, it would be neat to come across my old 1992 Toyota pickup, unmoleted except to the molesting I did to it. I might bid pretty high for that.

I think all the 'raw' cars of the 80's and 90's will come into play bigtime before the electrical nannies and electrical car takeover, as well as eventual loss of the manual tranny.

I was amazed at the number of customs this year and the money that they brought. There may be a future for 'properly' modded cars.

I haven't watched Barrett-Jackson, but based off what I have heard about it:
I suspect the ZR1, Viper ACR and Raptor would all go over big if the format/mindset doesn't change much. CTS-V and current Challengers might be desirable.
In 2040, I think Tesla cars, and the 1st gen Prius & Insight will have a place there. The FCX might be a big winner, too.

I keep thinking the NSX might be one of them due to it being fairly rare. I think the STI and EVO might also be there due to the amount of kids Wrecking tthe majority of these they will be fairly rare. S2000 could also be there thanks to all you guys trying to drive these in the snow making a dent in the S population.
