At work, so I don't have time to address all your points right now, but on this one, ABSOLUTELY I think they'd find something! What would be more popular than nailing an oil exec on price fixing or gouging charges? If there was any tiny hint of wrongdoing, they'd nail the guy to the wall and the sheeple would be thrilled. That they haven't been able to do so suggests to me there is nothing to find. Maybe Bush or Cheney wouldn't be likely to go after XOM, but do you think Pelosi or Boxxer or Feinstein would even stop to think twice? The press conferences would be held before the ink dried on the investigations.
A "real" investigation would go in, subpoena their entire email records, meeting agendas and minutes, supply contracts, and accounting records, spend 12 to 24 months going through them with a fine tooth comb, and then reporting back to Congress.

We aren't going to get that.

They haven't found Bill Clinton guilty of anything yet, either, but that doesn't mean he isn't guilty.

[QUOTE]You also have to take into account the proprty taxes and costs of running gas stations in different locations, property taxes and running costs are not the same from city to city, let alone nationwide.

I would say your statement is somewhat true of stations located in downtown cores of major cities, however even gas in the heart of LA, Chicago or NYC has barely hit $4/gallon yet. It's certainly not in danger of going that high in downtown Phoenix at present. In fact, having just done a quick search, Chicago has by far the most expensive gas of the 3 major cities at the moment, with several stations in the $3.90-4.10/gallon range. NYC is cheapest by quite a bit, and LA is a little ahead of NYC. Neither NYC or LA are what I'd consider cheap, yet it is midwestern Chicago (also not inexpensive) that beats both.
I don't have anything to prove or disprove your theory, but I will mention that IL adds 10-15% ethanol to their gas, driving up the price some. It's not necessarily fair to compare Chicago gas prices to other regions. It sucks, too.

Right, and that only emphasizes my point further with regard to sw05s2k's statement that property values have a significant effect. Not to say that property tax concerns don't have ANY affect, as costs are passed onto customers in some form, just that property taxes don't assert themselves in such a way that they change day to day like gas prices can and do.

^^ I can only go by the prices near me. Gas prices where I live are about 5 cents higher per gallon than where I work, both of which are pretty small towns. I was trying to rationalize the prices in my head and see what people thought of that "theory"... ooops. FTR, premium where I live was at 3.819, yesterday.

The good news is you guys are all doing your part to lower demand by sitting on your asses arguing about this stuff on line instead of going out for a drive in your S2000s. Thanks!

Gotta go and...

find a way to cut down on demand/consumption and watch the price drop. find a way to power cars without oil and you will see drops in price overnight, not to mention cleaner air, etc...and a loss of dependency on countries that mess with us big time....just find a way to do that one little thing.

Supplies of gasoline aren't building as sales drop, so the price must be fairly close to the equilibrium of supply and demand. We use more, yet the supply goes down (due to refinery outages), what do you expect?
