But really, why AWD? I've driven a few AWD cars and found that I prefer the feel of a 2WD car even if it means I can't always put the power down as well. I find they often feel better in intermittent traction situations. Just a preference thing.
Rain, dry, snow, ice, AWD for me. I'm in my last 2wd that I will ever own right now. In the rain it's like night and day compared to RWD or even FWD. I once drove in an extremely heavy rain with many folks unable to move forward, pulling off the highway. Several wrecks as well. Suby's AWD just went right through it like it was nothing.

We've taken it out and in the rain, snow, and ice and actually had to work quite hard to break traction. AWD won me over. More grip in all weather conditions and on any surface. Prefer RWD for track only cars, but if it's a DD or driven on public roads give me AWD every time.

I haven't been "in the all", but would have to agree. At the time the RL came out, it blew away Subaru, Audi and like for their AWD. I should've mentioned the RL in my first post, but I totally forgot about it.

Any other options like this? Budget would be $40k-ish or less, CPO used or new just needs a warranty.

WRX, evo, legacy are out.. not reliable when modifying a bit.. as I will do to anything I have AND no boy racer look either. I'd also prefer something with forced induction for power gain purposes... I arrived at the S4.

What do you guys think? SUV's are okay too!
Audi is first to come to mind, but while I love Audi I hate VW.

So there's also

I truly want an S4... but it looks like I will stick with the paid off RDX approach. I love our RDX and always wanted it to have more power... there is an available 80-100hp upgrades as is... but now that we can tune for them, boost here we come! I personally plan on doing all the bolt on-s, catless downpipe, and dyno tune - hopefully Evans doesn't think I'm insane when I ask them about it.. LOL.

Two off the wall options
1. Taurus SHO. Turbo V6 + AWD and comfort. From what I read it was very competent but not light weight handling.
2. The Chrysler RWD/AWD sedans. You can have a V8 and what I assume is a Mercedes based AWD system.

Yes plus that. The ford SHO is a very solid looking car with tons of power. The interior looks amazing and the car drives very nice. I bet it's also faster then the the Audi.

Without looking up numbers I can almost guarantee the SHO is not faster than the Audi... although the SHO is a nice looking car and one I did not think of! I'm going to research tuning solutions for the SHO for fun now! haha

Yes, stock, but I am talking slightly modified levels here... as per the original post. I am also talking about reliability at those "stage 2" levels... Audi offers it, Subaru and Mitsu don't. Also showing up to clients offices and such with a grocery fking wing on the back and hood scoops and widebody crap everywhere is a little out of my taste, that's why the Subarus and Evo is off my list... that plus I give a damn what the interior looks and functions like too.
