not really.
To be honest, I don't know much about MR-S' so that's probably a terrible example.
I'm trying to think of one off the top of my head that fits my example...oh yeah, I test drove a Mazda3 sedan a few years back that had a auto tranny with "sport select" or whatever they called it...that's a better example of an auto transmission with gear selection.
But yeah, I consider DSG or SMG a manual even though there's no clutch pedal.
And something like what was in the Mazda3 an auto even though there's a gear selection option.

my cousin use to own an automatic NSX for over 10 years. He doesn't know how to drive a stick so he got the auto. He then traded that auto for a Ferrari 360 with the F1 tranny. I really do hate him

If some of you remember the BMI vid that had a section dedicated to early model NSX's, they actually recommended getting an automatic NSX if you are buying used, for the auto's are not beat on as much as a manual. The engine is supposed to be healthier, and all it takes is a tranny swap.
If you shop around you can find a matching manual tranny for a relatively good price.
