Are Audi and VW getting heavier and heavier?
While every other car makers trying to reduce their cars weight for better handling and mileage, Audi and VW's car keep getting heavier and heavier.
What's up with that?

Yes they are, in the name of better structural rigidity. Even the A8 is hefty for a car with an aluminium chassis.
My 2004 S4 is 200 pounds heavier than my 2001 S4.
And I COMPLETELY agree with xviper.

Well, the front end is designed to work with the European license plates.
That's why in all Audi's official pictures even in the U.S. brochure, they only have European style license plates.
I challenge anyone to post a audi official picture with a U.S. license plate.

I used to love VWs and I even considered getting one lately ................. till I saw that great big, ugly, honkin' front end that looks like the car is wearing a "cup" coming at me. With a car bra on, people would think the thing had a jock strap on.

..... Why do that design now just to integrate the plates better, when a big part of VW and Audi markets are N. America. Are they trying to alienate that market by giving us ugly just so the home market can have a better plate-front bumper ensemble?
......

Audis and VWs are most definitely getting too heavy. The short blurb in the new C&D about the Audi A3 S-Line made me look twice. The maxed-out A3 weighs OVER 3700 POUNDS. That is absurd considering its size.
My Maxima, a 4-door V6-powered manual tranny vehicle that is in fact smaller current Accords and Camrys, weighs 400 lbs LESS than the new V6-powered GTI. Heck, even the A33 Maxima (00-03) weighs barely more than my 93 example.
Audis and VWs feel solid, and are well-made for sure, but the weight could definitely be a factor in this perception.
