Evo X uses a lot of gas as well. Talked to one local owner and he said he was getting 10-12 mpg (all city driving) on factory tune. Since he got a Cobb AccessPort, he's up to the 16-20 mpg range but that's still not that great.

I don't imagine it's any worse than any S4, including the V8.
I believe JonBoy is talking about his conversation with me.

Yes, those are the MPG numbers that I've experienced with my Evo X MR, according to the car computer. No, I've never done any more "precise" measurement.

And, yes, I really only drive the Evo in-town, back and forth from work, which is only a few miles away (if that). I've had the car for 13 months, and I just hit 5000 miles last week. I do not usually drive it "hard"--mostly in Normal mode, and unless your foot is into it, Normal shifts in auto mode around 3K, right when the turbo is coming online.

Dipping into the turbo does lower MPG quite drastically, as with any high-boost turbo car.

The MPG is the only real gripe that I have with the Evo. Then again, I knew about it going in--it wasn't a surprise. What was a very happy surprise was the improvement in MPG that I got from a simple plugin tune, no other mods.

i'm one of the biggest complainers of the MPG my X gets...city is about 16-19 and freeway is about 20-22, mixed has always been 18-20.xx for the last 9000 miles. my IX was averaging 22mpg every tank and on long trips get around 24-25. my X on a 700 miles round trip average a pathetic 21mpg, lol. same driving style, different cars.

if the S4 is any worse than the X, i can't imagine it's by too much...lol

Wow, that's some bad MPG.
I knew the STi's didn't have good gas mileage, but 16~19 city?
Well I guess it's a trade off for AWD and performance.

My C6 with shorter gearing of the Z51 gets around 16~18 city, and that's with quick acceleration.
Highways are anywhere from 24~27. Can't beat that.

The S4 does not impress me at all. For the money there are much nicer cars.

You can get a CPO'd S4 for $25k. With warranty. That's a pretty nice car for that price.

In 10.5 months of ownership I'm averaging 20MPG in the '08 STi. That is a 50/50 mix of city/highway, and I don't baby it, but don't beat on it either. I stay in S or S# too (don't use Imode). Like the EVO X, it suffers from a chitty stock tune. Suby came out with a flash, which helped, but I still need to get it tuned. I'm waiting until I have the dough for headers w/up pipe, down pipe, and cat back. Once I have all those parts I'll get it tuned. I read iwsti.com heaps, and I've talked to several owners who are seeing 25MPG average after they tuned the car. With 3 maps available the efficient map is yielding high 20's on road trips (26-28MPG). And that is with 350 hp/tq to the damn wheels. Can't wait

Wow, it doesn't sound like the Evo gets any better mileage than my M3!

I still vividly remember driving a mildly modded Evo 8 MR several years back, and can't imagine any Audi short of an R8 being as fun. Tried to test drive an X on several occassion, but my local Mitsu dealer is a ghostown, w/ nobody on the lot and the showroom closed down (guess you have to walk across the street to the Mercury dealer to get any help).

yeah my X's MPG is really surprising to me...almost makes me want to set the car on fire sometimes. i'm usually the guy that gets the "above-average-MPG" in the "MPG threads" on forums, but not the case for the X...many report worse MPG than me and while some report better, it seems they do it under extraordinary circumstances or just miscalculated their MPG, lol. it's truly depressing
